Here is their story in Rick’s words:

We first got involved with rescue kind of by accident. We volunteered with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and were asked to foster an American Black and Tan Coonhound pulled from a breeding mill. We contacted a Coonhound rescue group to help with his adoption. We had him at an outdoor Dog event and were introduced to the people from Ohio Basset Rescue and shortly there after we started fostering Basset Hounds.

Beagles came into play a few years later with Beagles R Us Beagle rescue. We have fostered and adopted out more hounds than I can  count. Some go quick and some take a bit longer and some become permanent fosters. These dogs usually are older and have medical or health issues of some kind. Then there are the foster failures. We as caregivers for these pups sometime become attached to our foster dogs and end up adopting them, thus the term “foster failure.” This has happened to us a few times.

The first time was back in ’04 we just took on an older Basset Hound named Roscoe. We had him for a month or so and stuck to me like glue! One Sunday evening a lady and her son came to meet him to see if he would fit them for adoption. During her visit sh made a comment to the effect of she would keep him for about 2 years and when she would have to move she would give him away to a sister or friend. That didn’t sit well with me. As soon as I closed the door behind her I said to my wife, “he’s not going anywhere!!!” We filled out and faxed the paperwork in that evening.

Roscoe was with us for 8yrs, sadly we lost him in Nov. 2011. My wifes failure happened 3yrs ago. I was contacted by the local shelter about a Basset and went to pick him up. When I went back to get him out of the pen I saw this little Beagle pup in the pen next to him. I told the shelter manager we also work with Beagle Rescue and if nobody adopts him to give me a call (thinking a beagle pup will be gone in no time).  Two weeks later I get a call, “Hey Rick, that little Beagle pup is back can you come get him?”  

So I went to pick our new 11 month old puppy and bring him home. He is a great little dog. We had him for 5 or 6 months with no activity from the website. My wife has been taking him to classes for obiedience and agility: I could tell she wanted to keep him. A few months later, she came home from class with him one evening and said, “I think I’m going to keep Carson, he’s starting to have fun with the agility training!” My reply was simply, “what took you so long?”

It’s very satisfying when someone adopts a rescue dog. I feel these folks have done their homework on the breed and truly know what to expect. The dogs usually get spoiled rotten, as the case at our house, and you can tell they know they are wanted and loved. Don’t get me wrong, it is a rewarding experience to get a puppy and raise him/her and watch them grow into great dogs. But, there is something about a rescue … they seem to know when that special person adopts them and they are going to their forever home to live happily ever after.

• Use the buddy system. Never send your child to wait for the bus alone. Always have them escorted by siblings, or have them wait at a popular bus stop. Some parents will drop their children off at a friend’s on their way to work, so they may wait for the bus together.
• Enforce a distance rule. Never allow your children to get too close to the street. Especially in rural areas. Speed limits are often ignored by other drivers on back or country roads. This can be extremely dangerous for drivers and children. Be aware if you have a hidden drive.
• Get to know the bus driver. Ask for a contact number so you may find out if/when the bus is running late.
• NEVER pass a school bus which is loading or unloading passengers.
• Be aware of extreme temperatures. This can be a concern when not only standing outside waiting for the bus, but when riding as well. Many buses do not have ample heating or air conditioning during extreme temperatures.  

No matter their age, always talk to your children about their day. Ask about specific parts, including their commute. Many children experience bullying on a school bus that they may not in the classroom. Communication is key to knowing when to be concerned. Or maybe your kitchen; catch your morning coffee and news all in one place. Plus you wouldn’t have to fight the kids for the remote on Saturday mornings if you put it in the bedroom. Or maybe your bathroom needs some spicing up. Hey, we’re not judging, but just maybe you’re still turning rabbit ears and changing channels on a rotary dial; lost and forgotten in an analog world.

Quite frankly we don’t care what you do with your new flat screen or Flip, we just want to give them away to two lucky fans. But you can’t win if you don’t enter by June 15th.

The Road Safety Counsil of Western Austrailia has produced a three minute PSA encouraging us all to simply slow down. Serene and powerful, it brings to light things that we usually don’t think about. It’s not just Type A personalities who are at risk of high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. Doing things quickly adds stress, no matter what the reason or method. At the end of the day, generally we don’t have much to prove for all that time spent rushing. On average, if two people leave the same point A for the same point B going through a town, if one of them speeds they probably arrive no more than three minutes ahead of the other going the limits. Is three minutes worth the risk?

The best thing about this PSA is its quiet matter-of-factness. It doesn’t preach or use shock value. It’s a simple reminder for us all to take some time and just breathe. And trust us, after watching it you’ll want to. Also check out the equally powerful PSA advocating seat belt usage. Talk about creating an emotional connection!

Many common household items can cause our furry friends major problems, items such as chewing gum, chocolate, flowers, and of course fertilizers, pesticides and common human medications like Aleve, Tylenol and others. This week serves as a reminder that we need to watch out for each other.

Just like Spot might bark at a stranger at the door, we should check to make sure that cabinets and drawers close properly and cannot be pried opened by curious cats.

We should check their outdoor habitats as well. One of the biggest dangers to our pets are our vehicles. If you have a not so new car, get it tuned up and seek car service. Things like oil and anti-freeze leaks can prove fatal to pets. Not to mention that those substances get washed into our ground water, contaminating local tributaries and water reservoirs that our drinking water comes from. Remind your neighbors too if your pets share out door space or are free roaming.

Our pets bring us endless joy in our daily lives, and we ask that you continue your commitment to provide them with a safe and happy home.
